The One who is free of any dependence on anything else for existence.<\/p>\n<p>The One through whom all things arise. The One by whom all things are eternally managed aright.<\/p>\n<p>The Ever-Living, Self-Existing One who is the foundation upon which all things exist.<\/p>\n<p>From the root q-w-m which has the following classical Arabic connotations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>to stand up, to rise up, to ascend, become high<br \/>\nto begin, to start, to come to pass<br \/>\nto arise, to set out<br \/>\nto be on-going, to exist<br \/>\nto be founded, to be built on<br \/>\nto undertake, to carry out, to manage<br \/>\nto make aright, straighten out, accurate, exact<br \/>\nto make righteous, upright<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This name is used in the Qur&#8217;\u0101n. For example, see 2:255<\/p>\n<p>The attributes of al-Hayy and al-Qayy\u016bm are often used to together, with al-Hayy signifying the attribute of ever-lasting life, and al-Qayy\u016bm signifying the attribute of self-existing life. Thus, the attributes of al-Hayy and al-Qayy\u016bm express two aspects of the One Life.<\/p>\n<p>Abu Hurairah reported that whenever the Prophet, peace be upon him, was faced with a serious difficulty, he would raise his head to the sky and supplicate, &#8221;Subhan-Allah al-&#8217;Azim (glory be to Allah, the Mighty).&#8221; And when he implored seriously and strongly, he would say &#8221;Ya Hayyu, Ya Qayyum (O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One upon Whom we all depend).&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i>(hadith of Tirmidhi)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The attribute of al-Qayy\u016bm is also nicely described by the words of Acts 17:28 which say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in Him we live and move and have our being<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The name al-Qayy\u016bm also has much the same meaning as the Hebrew phrase in Exodus 3:14 which is written as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"https:\/\/wahiduddin.net\/words\/images_i_q\/exodus_3_14.gif\" alt=\"hebrew\" width=\"212\" height=\"37\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and which is often translated as\u00a0<em>I am that I am<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>I am that which I have become<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As Sri Aurobindo wrote in his commentary of the Isha Upanishad:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>God is the only Being and all other existences are only His becomings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word mustaq\u012bm, also from this same q-w-m root, means\u00a0<i>straight, righteous,\u00a0upright, rising upwards or ascending<\/i>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"end_note\">\n<p>(Also written as al-qayyum, al-qayyoom, the Self-Existing: ya qayyum, ya qayyoom)<\/p>\n<p>copyright \u00a9 1998-2021 Richard Shelquist \u00a0All Rights Reserved<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>al-Qayy\u016bm The Self-Subsisting,\u00a0 The Self-Existing One upon Whom all others depend The One whose nature it is to exist.
