The One who blots out and leaves no trace of any sin or fault.<\/p>\n

The One who passes over and absolves any fault.<\/p>\n

The One who can remove and obliterate all traces of wrong actions.<\/p>\n

The One who can make any sin, error or fault disappear.<\/p>\n

From the root ’a-f-a which has the following classical Arabic connotations:<\/p>\n

to forgive, pardon
\nto pass over, forgo, absolve
\nto obliterate all traces, efface, remove
\nto kill-off, allow to die
\nto turn away from punishing, not see, annul
\nto make unapparent, imperceptible
\nto give spontaneously, to give without constraint
\nto give more than what is due<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This name is used in the Qur’\u0101n. For example, see 4:99<\/p>\n

The words Ghaf\u016br and Ghaff\u0101r denote simply forgiving or protecting, while ’Af\u016bw indicates complete removal or obliteration of the condition.<\/p>\n

The classical Arabic dictionary Taj al-Ar\u016bs offers a beautiful metaphor wherein ’af\u016bw is said to be like a mighty desert wind which completely obliterates the footprints in the sand.<\/p>\n

Ab\u016b\u00a0H<\/span>\u0101mid al-Ghaz\u0101l\u012b wrote:<\/p>\n

Man’s share in this name should be clear: he should be one who excuses everyone who harms him, doing good for him instead, just the same as he sees God most high doing good in this world to the disobedient as well as the disbeliever, rather than bring them swiftly to punishment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

’Af\u016bw and Muntaqim are complementary attributes. ’Af\u016bw is the forgiver, while Muntaqim is the avenger.<\/p>\n
