The wife of a very dear friend in Long Beach came to see me. Her throat was paralysed, the result of an accident, and she was seeking my help. ”I can’t eat anything,” she told me. ”I have to be fed through a tube.”<\/p>\n
I asked, ”Can you drink milk?”<\/p>\n
”No,” she replied. ”As soon as I try to drink liquids there is a spasm in my throat, and I cannot swallow.”<\/p>\n
”But that is all in your mind,” I said. ”You cannot leave here today until you have drunk a glass of milk.”<\/p>\n
She smiled. I asked for some milk to be brought.<\/p>\n
”Now drink it!” I said firmly.<\/p>\n
Because of the limiting thoughts in her mind, put there by the doctors and her past experiences, she was convinced that she couldn’t drink. But my thought was stronger. After all, the nerves and cells are all controlled by the mind. But hers was so poisoned with doubt that she firmly believed she couldn’t swallow. So the first gulps of milk were expelled from her mouth. She was sure that I was wrong.<\/p>\n
Then I said, ”I mean it; you cannot leave this room until you have finished that glass of milk.”<\/p>\n
”It is impossible,” she argued; but I used my stronger thoughts to counteract her negative thoughts. She tried again, and this time she was able to swallow. She was cured.<\/p>\n
