The Veda, which means \u201cwisdom,\u201d is comprised of four ancient and holy scriptures which all Hindus revere as the revealed word of God.<\/span><\/samp><\/h3>\n<p class=\"paraspaceabove\"><samp><span class=\"dropcap2\"><span class=\"reds1\">L<\/span><\/span><span class=\"smallcap\">IKE THE TAOIST<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"smallcap\"><em>TAO TE CHING<\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>the Buddhist\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Dhammapada<\/span>, the Sikh\u00a0<em>Adi Granth<\/em>, the Jewish\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Torah<\/span>, the Christian\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Bible<\/span>\u00a0and the Muslim\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Koran<\/span>\u2014the\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Veda<\/span>\u00a0is the Hindu holy book. The four books of the\u00a0<em>Vedas\u2014Rig, Yajur, Sama<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Atharva<\/em>\u2014include over 100,000 verses. The knowledge imparted by the\u00a0<em>Vedas<\/em>\u00a0ranges from earthy devotion to high philosophy. Their words and wisdom permeate Hindu thought, ritual and meditation.<\/samp><\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\"><samp>The\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Vedas<\/span>\u00a0are the ultimate scriptural authority for Hindus. Their oldest portions are said by some to date back as far as 6,000 bce, orally transmitted for most of history and written down in Sanskrit in the last few millennia, making them the world\u2019s longest and most ancient scripture. The\u00a0<em>Vedas<\/em>\u00a0open a rare window into ancient Indian society, proclaiming life\u2019s sacredness and the way to oneness with God.<\/samp><\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\"><samp><strong>Elaboration:<\/strong>\u00a0For untold centuries unto today, the\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Vedas<\/span>\u00a0have remained the sustaining force and authoritative doctrine, guiding followers in ways of worship, duty and enlightenment. The\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Vedas<\/span>\u00a0are the meditative and philosophical focus for millions of monks and a billion seekers. Their stanzas are chanted from memory by priests and laymen daily as liturgy in temple worship and domestic ritual. All Hindus wholeheartedly accept the\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Vedas<\/span>, yet each draws selectively, interprets freely and amplifies abundantly. This divine transmission is depicted here as Lord Siva bestows the four books of the Veda to four rishis. The sacred knowledge, passed orally for most of history, was finally scribed in Sanskrit on palm leaves to share and preserve it.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"red1\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022 \u2022\u00a0<\/span><\/samp><\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\"><samp>Each of the four\u00a0<em>Vedas<\/em>\u00a0has four sections:\u00a0<em>Samhitas<\/em>\u00a0(hymn collections),\u00a0<em>Brahmanas<\/em>\u00a0(priestly manuals),\u00a0<em>Aranyakas<\/em>\u00a0(forest treatises) and\u00a0<em>Upanishads<\/em>\u00a0(enlightened discourses). The\u00a0<em>Samhitas<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Brahmanas<\/em>\u00a0affirm that God is immanent and transcendent and prescribe ritual worship, mantra and devotional hymns to establish communication with the spiritual worlds. The hymns are invocations to the One Divine and to the Divinities of nature, such as the Sun, the Rain, the Wind, the Fire and the Dawn\u2014as well as prayers for matrimony, progeny, prosperity, concord, protection, domestic rites and more.\u00a0<\/samp><\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\"><samp>The\u00a0<em>Aranyakas<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Upanishads<\/em>\u00a0outline the soul\u2019s evolutionary journey, provide yogic philosophical training and propound realization of man\u2019s oneness with God as the destiny of all souls. Today, the\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Vedas<\/span>\u00a0are published in Sanskrit, English, French, German and other languages. But it is the popular, metaphysical\u00a0<span class=\"italic\">Upanishads<\/span>\u00a0that have been most amply and ably translated.<\/samp><\/p>\n<p class=\"indent\"><samp>The\u00a0<em>Vedas<\/em>\u00a0advise: \u201cLet there be no neglect of Truth. Let there be no neglect of dharma. Let there be no neglect of welfare. Let there be no neglect of prosperity. Let there be no neglect of study and teaching. Let there be no neglect of the duties to the Gods and the ancestors\u201d (<em>Taittiriya Upanishad<\/em>\u00a01.11.1). \u201cUnited your resolve, united your hearts, may your spirits be one, that you may long together dwell in unity and concord!\u201d (<em>Rig Veda<\/em>\u00a010.191.4). \u201cThere, where there is no darkness, nor night, nor day, nor being, nor non-being, there is the Auspicious One, alone, absolute and eternal. There is the glorious splendor of that Light from whom in the beginning sprang ancient wisdom\u201d (<em>Shvetashvatara Upanishad<\/em>\u00a04.18). \u201cTaking as a bow the great weapon of the Upanishad, one should put upon it an arrow sharpened by meditation.
