Heeding the ten yamas or \u201crestraints\u201d keeps our instinctive nature in check. Abiding by the ten niyamas, \u201cobservances,\u201d makes us more religious and cultured, revealing our refined soul nature. Live a kindly life, never causing fear, pain or injury. See God in everyone. Follow a vegetarian diet.<a id=\"para-7\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-7\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">2.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>SATYA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cTruthfulness.\u201d Speak only what is true, kind, helpful and necessary. Be true to your promises. Don\u2019t keep secrets from family or friends. Be accurate and frank in discussions. Don\u2019t deceive others. Admit your failings. Do not gossip, backbite or tell lies.<a id=\"para-8\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-8\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">3.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>ASTEYA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cNonstealing.\u201d Do not steal. Control your desires, and live within your family\u2019s means. Do not desire what others possess. Do not misuse things you borrow. Do not gamble or fail to repay debts. Do not use others\u2019 names, words, resources or rights without permission and acknowledgement.<a id=\"para-9\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-9\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">4.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>BRAHMACHARYA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cDivine conduct.\u201d Control your desires when single, reserving sexual relations for marriage. Before marriage, use vital energies in study, and after marriage in creating family success. Dress and speak modestly. Seek holy company. Avoid pornography and violence on TV, in movies, magazines and online.<a id=\"para-10\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-10\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">5.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>KSHAMA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cPatience.\u201d Restrain intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances. Be agreeable and unhurried. Let others behave according to their nature, without adjusting to you. Do not argue, interrupt or dominate conversations. Be especially patient with children and the elderly. Remain poised even in difficult times.<a id=\"para-11\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-11\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">6.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>DHRITI:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cSteadfastness.\u201d Overcome fear, indecision and changeableness. Stick to what you are supposed to do without getting sidetracked. Be firm in your decisions. Achieve your goals with a prayer, purpose, plan, persistence and push. Do not complain or make excuses. Develop willpower, courage and industriousness. Conquer obstacles.<a id=\"para-12\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-12\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">7.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>DAYA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cCompassion.\u201d Conquer cruel and insensitive feelings toward all beings. See God everywhere. Be kind to people, animals, plants and the Earth itself. Forgive those who apologize and express their true remorse. Foster sympathy for others\u2019 needs and suffering. Help those who are weak, poor, aged or in pain. Oppose family abuse and other cruelties.<a id=\"para-13\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-13\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">8.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>ARJAVA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cHonesty, straightforwardness.\u201d Give up deception and wrongdoing. Obey the laws of your nation and community. Do not bribe or accept bribes. Do not cheat or deceive others. Be honest with yourself. Face and accept your faults without blaming them on others. Always be honest.<a id=\"para-14\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-14\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">9.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>MITAHARA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cModerate appetite.\u201d Do not eat too much. Do not eat meat, fish, shellfish, fowl or eggs. Enjoy fresh, wholesome vegetarian foods that vitalize the body. Avoid junk and processed foods, such as white sugar, white rice and white flour. Eat at regular times and only when hungry. Do not eat in a disturbed atmosphere or when upset.<a id=\"para-15\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-15\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">10.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>SAUCHA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cPurity.\u201d Avoid impurity in mind, body and speech. Maintain a clean, healthy body. Keep a pure, uncluttered home and workplace. Act virtuously. Keep good company. Recognize your errors, confess, apologize and make amends. Welcome constructive criticism. Resolve all contention before sleep. Seek out and overcome your own faults. Do not boast. Shun pride and pretension.<a id=\"para-18\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-18\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">2.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>SANTOSHA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cContentment.\u201d Seek joy and serenity in life. Be happy, smile and uplift others. Live in gratitude for your health, friends and belongings. Don\u2019t complain about what you don\u2019t have. Identify with the eternal You. Live in the eternal now and work for spiritual progress.<a id=\"para-19\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-19\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">3.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>DANA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cGiving.\u201d Tithe and donate to temples, ashrams and spiritual organizations. Feed and give to those in need. Freely share your time and talents. Treat guests as God.<a id=\"para-20\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-20\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">4.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>ASTIKYA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cFaith.\u201d Believe firmly in God, Gods, guru and your path to enlightenment. Trust in the scriptures and traditions. Be loyal to your lineage, one with your satguru. Don\u2019t make friends with those who try to break your faith. Practice devotion and sadhana to build faith. Avoid doubt and despair.<a id=\"para-21\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-21\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">5.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>ISHVARAPUJANA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cWorship of the Lord.\u201d Worship and meditate daily. Offer fruit, flowers or food daily at the home shrine. Learn a simple puja. Visit the shrine when leaving home and returning.<a id=\"para-22\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-22\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">6.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>SIDDHANTA SHRAVANA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cScriptural listening.\u201d Study the teachings and listen to the wise of your lineage. Carefully choose a guru, then follow his path and don\u2019t waste time exploring other ways. Listen to readings and inspired talks by which wisdom flows from knower to seeker.<a id=\"para-23\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-23\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">7.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>MATI:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cCognition.\u201d Develop a spiritual will and intellect with your satguru\u2019s guidance. Strive for knowledge of God, to awaken the light within. Seek the lesson in each experience to understand life and yourself. Cultivate intuition through meditation.<a id=\"para-24\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-24\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">8.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>VRATA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cSacred vows.\u201d Take and fulfill religious vows, rules and observances. These are spiritual contracts with your soul, your community and God, Gods and guru. Fast periodically. Pilgrimage yearly. Uphold your vows strictly, be they chastity, marriage, monasticism, nonaddiction, tithing, loyalty to a lineage, vegetarianism or nonsmoking.<a id=\"para-25\" class=\"para-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanacademy.com\/media\/books\/path-to-siva\/web\/ch40.html#para-25\">\u00a7<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"number\"><span class=\"number_color\">9.<\/span>\u00a0<small><span class=\"green\"><strong>JAPA:<\/strong><\/span><\/small>\u00a0\u201cRecitation.\u201d Recite your holy mantra daily as instructed by your guru. Bathe first, quiet the mind and concentrate fully to let japa harmonize, purify and uplift you.
